The Challenge

When Rock of Ages Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs first contacted ChurchSEO.io, they weren’t looking for a new website.

They simply wanted an honest SEO review.

Like many churches, they sensed they weren’t showing up on Google as often as they should, but they weren’t sure why. Before recommending a single change, we performed a comprehensive audit of their website, Google Business Profile, local SEO, branding, and competitors.

What we found was encouraging.

The opportunity wasn’t the problem.

The foundation was.

Understanding the Opportunity

Before beginning any optimization, we looked at the search demand in the Colorado Springs market.

Every month, Google processes approximately:

  • 2.7 million searches for “churches near me.”
  • 49,500 searches for “Lutheran churches near me.”
  • 5,400 searches for “churches in Colorado Springs.”
  • 390 searches for “Lutheran churches in Colorado Springs.”
  • 301,000 searches for “preschools near me.”
  • 2,000 searches for “daycares near me.”

People were already searching for exactly the ministries Rock of Ages provides.

The challenge was making sure Google understood the church well enough to recommend it.

That challenge is especially significant in Colorado Springs.

Unlike many cities, Colorado Springs is home to the headquarters of numerous evangelical ministries, publishers, nonprofits, and Christian organizations. Churches in the area often have experienced communications teams, healthy marketing budgets, and sophisticated digital strategies.

Ranking well in this market isn’t easy.

What Our Audit of Rock of Ages Lutheran Church’s Digital Footprint Discovered

Our review identified several foundational issues that were limiting the church’s visibility.

1. Google Sites Was Holding Rock of Ages Lutheran Church’s Website Back

The existing website had been built using Google Sites.

old Google site for Rock of Ages Lutheran Church

Although Google Sites is simple enough for volunteers to manage, it lacks many of the controls necessary for effective church SEO.

Important technical elements—including page titles, metadata, site architecture, internal linking, and page optimization—are difficult or impossible to fully control.

Rather than trying to squeeze better rankings out of a platform with significant limitations, we recommended rebuilding the website from the ground up.

This meant that the church website wasn’t ranking well for niche queries like “Lutheran churches in Colorado Springs.”

2. Rock of Ages’ Educational Ministry Identity Wasn’t Consistent

One of the more surprising discoveries had nothing to do with technology.

Across the website and online presence, the educational ministry was described several different ways.

Sometimes it was called a school.

Elsewhere it was referred to as child care.

Other pages called it a preschool.

While these descriptions may sound interchangeable, inconsistent branding creates confusion—for both Google and prospective families.

One of the first recommendations was to clarify how the ministry understood itself and then communicate that identity consistently across every platform.

SEO rewards clarity.

3. One Google Business Profile Was Trying to Represent Two Ministries

The church had a single Google Business Profile attempting to represent both the church and the preschool.

This is a surprisingly common mistake.

Parents searching for a preschool have very different intentions than someone searching for a church home.

Those audiences deserve different photos.

Different descriptions.

Different reviews.

Different categories.

Different services.

Trying to serve both audiences through one listing often weakens both.

And, this means that the Google Business Profile will perform poorly both for church-related and preschool-related searches. This was the case for Rock of Ages:

We recommended creating a dedicated Google Business Profile for the preschool while optimizing the existing profile exclusively for the church.

4. Rock of Ages’ Lutheran Church’s Website Didn’t Guide Visitors

The existing website also lacked a clear user journey.

Whether someone was looking for Sunday worship or researching preschool enrollment, everyone essentially landed in the same place.

The redesign intentionally created two distinct pathways.

Church visitors are guided toward a Plan Your Visit page.

Our Strategy for Rock of Ages Lutheran Church – Colorado Springs

Rather than chasing SEO tricks, we focused on building a solid long-term foundation.

A Complete Website Rebuild

The church migrated from Google Sites to a custom Webflow website.

This wasn’t simply a visual redesign.

Our Webflow framework has SEO built directly into it.

Every page includes:

  • Proper H1 structure
  • Optimized page titles
  • Clean semantic HTML
  • Strategic internal linking
  • Clear information architecture
  • Fast loading performance
  • Mobile optimization

Instead of requiring churches to remember dozens of technical SEO details every time they create a page, much of the optimization is already baked into the platform.

Building Around Real Search Demand

Rather than guessing what people might search for, the new website was organized around actual keyword research.

Content and page structure were intentionally designed around searches like:

  • Churches in Colorado Springs
  • Lutheran Church Colorado Springs
  • Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Colorado Springs
  • Preschool Colorado Springs
  • Vacation Bible School Colorado Springs

Every page had a clear purpose.

Every page answered a real search.

Improving Local SEO

The local SEO campaign included:

As part of the authority-building strategy, Rock of Ages was also featured in multiple curated “Best Churches in Colorado Springs” articles (example 1 | example 2).

These local authority pages strengthen traditional SEO through relevant backlinks while also increasing the likelihood of being referenced in AI-powered search experiences.

Migrating to a Better Domain

The church also adopted a new domain:

rockofagescos.church

Changing domains always carries SEO risks if handled incorrectly.

To preserve existing search equity, we:

  • Redirected every important page
  • Migrated Google Search Console
  • Forwarded the previous domain
  • Updated indexing
  • Monitored Google’s transition to the new URLs

Solving Google Business Profile Verification

The migration wasn’t entirely smooth.

Google required a video verification of the church’s existing Google Business Profile before optimization could continue.

Working together with a skilled church volunteer, we successfully completed the verification process after multiple attempts, preserving ownership of the profile and allowing the optimization work to move forward.

Real Ministry Results

Good SEO isn’t just about rankings.

It’s about people.

The preschool began receiving tour requests from families discovering the ministry through Google.

The church welcomed visitors from outside Colorado Springs who found Rock of Ages while searching online.

Church leadership was especially excited by both the speed of the improvements and the increased visibility of the preschool.

Why It Worked

Several decisions made an immediate difference.

First, moving away from Google Sites removed technical limitations that had been suppressing the church’s search visibility.

Second, separating the church and preschool into distinct Google Business Profiles allowed each ministry to compete for the searches most relevant to its audience.

Third, the new Webflow website was designed from the ground up with technical SEO built into every page rather than added as an afterthought.

Finally, the strategy began with clarity.

Rather than trying to rank for everything, we first clarified exactly who the church was, how it described itself, and how visitors should move through the website.

That clarity benefited both users and search engines.

Lessons for Other Churches

Every church can learn something from Rock of Ages.

The biggest lesson isn’t about Webflow.

Or Google Business Profiles.

Or backlinks.

It’s about clarity.

Be clear about who you are.

Be clear about what ministries you offer.

Be consistent in how you describe those ministries across your website, Google Business Profile, and every online directory.

If your church also operates a preschool or school, don’t force both ministries into the same Google Business Profile.

Give each ministry its own digital front door.

Google rewards clarity.

Visitors do too.
